Lake
Tillery
Lake Tillery is located in the southern part of the
Piedmont Triad area, about one hour east of Charlotte,
North Carolina. When you look at a geographic map of
North Carolina, Lake Tillery is almost right in the
middle of the state, making it close to not only
Charlotte but also Greensboro and Asheboro. Serving as
the divider line between Stanly and Montgomery County,
Lake Tillery is bordered by Morrow Mountain State Park
on the west side and the Uwharrie National Forest on the
east side.
Lake Tillery is approximately 5,000 acres and has about
104 miles of shoreline. The serene and relaxing spirit
of the lake has managed to survive due to the management
of the lake by Progress Energy, for hydroelectric
production. Progress Energy restricts waterfront
development, therefore maintaining a tranquil and serene
lake atmosphere.
The Lake Tillery area is very much a rural community,
but due to its beautiful surroundings and location near
larger areas, it is the perfect blending of both worlds.
If you are searching for tranquility and a little bit of
peace, then Lake Tillery is the place for you!
Badin Lake
Badin Lake was built in 1917 by the Aluminum Company of
America (ALCOA) to generate hydroelectric power for the
aluminum plant at Badin. The lake has 115 miles of

the Uwharrie Mountains, Badin Lake’s eastern shore
borders some 46,000 acres of the Uwharrie National
Forest as well as Morrow Mountain. The lake is stocked
with catfish, bream, largemouth, white, and striped
bass.
Badin Lake is home to the gated community of Uwharrie
Point and the Old North State Club Golf Resort. Other
communities include Badin Shores, Pinehaven, Dixie
Shores, and Heron Bay.

Activities
There are a great deal of things to check out when in
our area.
Since Lake Tillery is surrounded by the Uwharrie
Mountains on one side and Morrow Mountain State Park on
the other, there are a great deal of recreation
opportunities on the lake. Residents and visitors can
enjoy a day of hiking and exploring the areas around the
lake. Lake Tillery has also served as a haven for
anglers and fishermen from all over. Most fishermen
prefer Lake Tillery to most of the area’s other fishing
spots because of the calm and quiet waters and
atmosphere of the lake. Boating and water sports are
also popular pastimes.
The Lake Tillery area is also popular for golf. Piney
Point Golf Course, in Stanly County, and Tillery
Traditions Golf Course, in Montgomery County are two
highly ranked golf courses that are within a short
driving distance from the lake. Also a little bit
further away is the Tom Fazio designed Old North State
Club of Uwharrie Point on Badin Lake, which is the
number two ranked course in North Carolina. In addition,
let’s not forget that one of the top spots for golf in
the world, Pinehurst, is only about a thirty-minute
drive away and features over thirty championship golf
courses.
Near Lake Tillery is Morrow Mountain State Park, which
features miles and miles of beautiful landscapes and a
few high peaks of the Uwharrie Mountains. The park is
open year round and has plenty of opportunities for
outdoor fun like hiking, biking, picnicking, fishing,
and hunting.
A magnificent place to visit is The Fork Farm, which is
a 1,300-acre farm that was created to preserve the
wildlife in the area and to set up a state of the art
equestrian facility. The Fork Farm is a great place to
hold weddings, banquets, corporate events and other
social events. Guests can enjoy a variety of equestrian
activities like trail rides and hayrides. For those that
enjoy being in the outdoors, The Fork Farm also has
sporting clays, shooting games and hunting (deer, quail,
duck, and dove).
A popular place among guests and residents in the Stanly
County NC area is visiting the Town Creek Indian Mound.
The Indian inhabitants of the area built mounds such as
the Town Creek mound thousands of years ago, and they
served as social centers for the tribes. The visitor
center at the mound features interpretive exhibits, as
well as other programs throughout the year that serve to
educate and celebrate the Indian heritage that was here
for thousands of years before Columbus discovered North
America.
Another place to check out is the Reed Gold Mine, which
is the site of the first documented gold mine in the
United States. Once upon a time, gold mining was a very
big business in North Carolina and in the Stanly County
NC area. Today, portions of the mine and the tunnels
leading to the mine have been restored and guided tours
are given.

students with the best technology and resources

teacher ratios and are committed to providing the best
education for their students.
